Forwarding

Sometimes you need to see a captured email in a real client: how Outlook renders it, whether the link opens your mobile app. Forwarding sends a captured message on to a real mailbox. It is the only way mail leaves Testlie, so it is fenced in. Forwarding is included from the Team plan.

Verified addresses

You can only forward to addresses that have confirmed they want the mail:

  1. An admin adds the address with the API:

  2. Testlie emails that address a confirmation link.

  3. The owner of the mailbox opens the link and clicks Confirm. The address is now verified for your team.

Confirmation emails are limited to 20 per team and 30 per person each day; removing and re-adding an address does not reset the count.

GET /api/forward-addresses lists the team's addresses and whether each is verified. The link works for 7 days; adding the address again resends it (at most once a minute). Removing an address (DELETE /api/forward-addresses/:id) also removes it from every inbox's automatic forwarding. A team can have up to 50 forwarding addresses.

This stops anyone from using Testlie to send captured mail, which can contain anything, to people who never asked for it.

Forwarding one message

Open the message and use Forward, or:

Up to 10 recipients per forward. Every forward is recorded in the team's audit log.

Automatic forwarding

An inbox can forward every message it receives (admins, on the inbox's Forwarding & webhooks tab, or PUT /api/inboxes/:id/forwarding):

match is an optional case-insensitive substring of the envelope recipient: with the example above, only mail addressed to @your-company.com recipients is forwarded, and test mail to example.com addresses is not. Automatic forwards run in the background and are retried if the outbound server is unavailable. A message that has already been forwarded three times by Testlie is not forwarded again, which prevents loops between two inboxes that forward to each other.

What recipients receive

A forward is a new message from Testlie's own address with the original attached as original.eml, so the captured From address is never sent on as if it were real.

Limits

Forwarded recipients count toward a daily limit per team (see Plans & limits); one message forwarded to three addresses counts three. Forwarding needs the server to have an outbound SMTP server configured (OUTBOUND_SMTP_URL); without one, the forwarding controls are disabled.
